Light Blast Text

April 1st, 2008

Step 1 - Setting up the Document

Step 1Create a 500×500 image in photoshop and make the background Black.

Using the Type Tool, type a word in White. For the sake of this tutorial, I will use Impact at Size 60pt with the text “N-sane ART”

Rasterize the layer ( Layer > Rasterize > Layer ) and name it “templight”. Make sure layer “templight” is activated on the Layer Palette.

Select All ( Select > All or Ctrl-A ).

Cut and Paste the selection and name the new layer “Light”. This makes the text perfectly centered.

Delete layer “templight”.

Step 2 - Polar Coordinates
Hide Step Hide Step

Polar Coordinates Here comes the fun part! Activate layer “Light” on the Layer Palette and use the Polar Coordinates Filter ( Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates ) and choose Polar to Rectangular

This should create the distorted image you see to the left. Basically, Photoshop has just changed the image’s coordinate system from a rectangular one (x,y) to a polar one (angle, distance).

Step 3 - Wind
Hide Step Hide Step

Wind 1Use the Wind Filter ( Filter > Stylize > Wind ) and choose Wind for the method and From the right for the Direction. Press CTRL-F.

Now you need to create wind that is going the opposite direction. Do the same thing as above except this time choose the option From the Left.

Rotate your canvas to the right ( Image > Rotate Canvas > 90 CW )

Wind 2Use the Wind Filter ( Filter > Stylize > Wind ) and choose Wind for the method and From the right for the Direction. Press CTRL-F.

Rotate your canvas to the left ( Image > Rotate Canvas > 90 CCW ) to return your image to the proper orientation.

Step 4 - Back to Rectangular Coordinates
Hide Step Hide Step

Back to RectangularYou are almost done! Use the Polar Coordinates Filter ( Filter -> Distort -> Polar Coordinates ) and choose Rectangular to Polar.

Almost DoneLooks cool doesn’t it? Now, Select the Text Tool and write the text you first started with. Color it a different color such as Black and move it over the white to create some contrast. You are done!

Step 5 - Color
Hide Step Hide Step

One extra thing you can do is to add some color to your Light Blast Text. There are many ways to do this. Our favorite way is to use overlays.

All you need to do is create a new layer above the blast layer, fill this new layer with whatever color you want, and change it’s blending mode to “Overlay”

In the image below, we filled the color layer with a radial gradient that went from red to blue.

Photoshop - Decay Text Effect

March 31st, 2008

This photoshop tutorial will teach on how to create an effect of decayed text with simple but effective way.

  1. Create a new document of white background with any dimension, my case i am using 500 x 500 px. Type in your text and choose type of font which preferably wide on its width, here i am using Impact.

  2. Then Rasterize the font by right clicking on the Text Layer and select Rasterize Type

  3. Next, find a picture which has multiple objects in it or with complicated object texture. For me on this tutorial, i simply grab a picture of a grass field as shown above. Open it in photoshop of course.

  4. If your picture has more than 2 colors, desaturate your picture by going to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate or shortcut key Ctrl + Shift + U, this will turn the whole picture to black and white. In my case my picture only consist of black and green, so i remain as it is.
Using that picture, open up the Levels option by going to Image > Adjustments > Levels or the shortcut key Ctrl + L. Then adjust the settings to enhance the picture’s contrast. It’s ok if the picture’s color has gone burst, that’s our objective. In case you don’t know how to control the settings, just follow the number or pattern as shown on the above image

  5. If you are not satisfied with the above result, you can always open up the Levels option again to adjust.

  6. Now, use the wand tool (shortcut key W), using tolerance amount of 20 - 30, make sure the Contiguous is uncheck. Select any part of the the picture to get a region of interest.

  7. While the selection is active, copy it’s content (Ctrl + C) and paste it on top of your text which you had created on step 1. This content will be on it’s own new layer. Name this layer decay

  8. After that, Ctrl + Click on the thumbnail of the layer decay which was created on step 7 to make a marquee selection all over it.

  9. Hide the decay layer, click once on the Text Layer to activate that layer, use the marquee tool (shortcut key M) and move the marquee selection around. *remember to use marquee too to move and not the arrow tool as it will cut the text straight away.
After you decide on which area that you want to decay the text, press Delete once. The result might not be as what you want to for the first try, but it’s trial and error kind a way to do it, so u can always undo it (shortcut key ctrl + alt + Z) and move around the region again and delete to see the result, repeat this until you can the desire result.

  10. This is my end result. Please be noted that your result will surely be different from the above shown image, you can’t expect 2 things will decay the same way right? Anyway the effect will still be there.

By using the text created from the above steps, again you can make several designs on it as shown below. Happy photoshop-ing!
